A heavy drilling station is an extremely valuable strategic object in the fringe Federation system Velorum. During the war with Aliens politicians were too busy to deal with remote systems, and the station was rented for 50 years by an off-radar private corporation.
Yet even during the war with Aliens, the Cartel never backed down from the plan to seize the processing rig even for a moment. We don't even have to tell you how it is now, during a lull, with the Federation splintering into ambitious corporations. Some believe that the Commonwealth of Mining Systems secretly pays the Cartel to make sure their competitors are driven away from this territory.
