Lunar ascent

July 21st, 1969

Astronauts stayed on the Moon for a total of 21 hours 36 minutes and 21 second. During the first 10 seconds ‘Eagle’ rises vertically. Through a viewport Aldrin sees how under the jet’s impact pieces of landing stage insulation and the mounted flag are pushed apart.

As a result of several consecutive maneuvers, three and a half hours after take-off, ‘Eagle’ and ‘Columbia’ converge to within 30 m of each other remain motionless in this position.

Collins manually controls the final rendezvous and docking.

He inflates the transition tunnel, opens the hatch and hands Armstrong and Aldrin a vacuum cleaner. They need to clean their suits and everything that will be transferred to the command module.

Once Armstrong and Aldrin are in the command module, the ascent stage of ‘Eagle’ is dropped. It stays in orbit, but eventually has to fall on the surface.
